Comments: Nice visual touches; a wonderful cast; a great soundtrack; absurdist humor. Seann William Scott is deadpan hilarious. Any film that successfully incorporate a dance number, wins.
The key to this film -- I watched the "Cannes" cut -- is to hit your 5 second Fast Forward button every time the narrator butts in. Don't listen to any of it. Any film that needs a narrator to tell its story, loses. Don't glean big ideas. Laugh. It's rare to see an ensemble cast this large all fully commit. It's palpable. It means there's something in there. The greatest commitment is a commitment to nothing. If you put something in there it all goes away. Save yourself. Save humanity. Discard meaning. Summary: Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros is an action star who's stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now, an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Ronald Taverner, a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy. |
