Comments: Remarkable how far at bay any sexual or romantic tension is kept. Nice work. You know what this is going to be and how it's going to end from the start. The film takes a big dip about two thirds in with speeches and melodramatic family drama, but other than that it's a gigantic ice cream sundae. Kasumi Arimura* has a lot of screen charisma for a young actress. The film wouldn't have worked without her. I also found the cram-school teacher adorable, if caricatured. So, it is what it is, and it's good at what it is. I cried four times.
*Kasumi Arimura made Strobe Edge work, albeit with Ryuichi Hiroki directing. She worked in I Am a Hero, but really should have been allowed to use her super zombie strength to rip that bad guy in half. She stars in another 2016 but upcoming Ryuichi Hiroki film: Natsumi's Firefly. Hiroki knows how to make stars of the actresses he chooses and seldom works with the same one more than once. Kasumi's future looks bright. Summary: A high school girl, Sayaka Kudō was the bottom of the class. After a year, she improved her deviation value from 30 to 70, then passed Keio University that is considered one of the most difficult to enter in Japan. |
