I enjoyed Lily Franky in his feature film debut a decade ago, All Around Us, for his non-acting. Now that he's played the same character in every single Japanese film made since then, with the added disfeature that he now acts his non-acting, I find him insufferable. I don't like sloppy bad eating-acting as character development, and I'm no fan of plucky guitar soundtracks. So this brilliant and wonderful film mostly repulsed me. Sorry Hirokazu, you're one of my favorite directors. You made a few choices that didn't work for me. I'm happy they worked for a lot of others. Congratulations on your success with the film. Summary: A family of small-time crooks take in a child they find on the street. |
