Mama died today. Maybe it was yesterday Today, Mommy turned to dust This is a series of skits sprinkled with animations and dreams. A digital Monty Python. But younger. You can't be a nihilist at 13, so it's funny. Or precocious. This film was not working for me until Sosuke Ikematsu showed up. He's so EMo even though you can't say that any more. It still took a while to get going but the last half hour is a magic carpet ride. A lot of it had to do with Ikuko coming to the fore. She has the best lines in the film: "It's loserish not to say it"; "Go with your gut"; "Despair is uncool". Maybe it just took me a while to find the rhythm. But when you start your film with your lead character announcing that before we start the film we need to do some background exposition ... Yikes. It rumpled my stilt skins, threw the thing into some hybrid of past tense and passive voice. Sure, there were some spectacular scenes in the first two acts but they didn't feel free. Once the burden of storytelling was lifted, freedom was restored. Bottom line: I didn't like the two songs they played live but "WE ARE ZOMBIES BUT ALIVE" that plays to the end credit roll is as good a pop song as you can ask for. Love loved it. Summary: Four Japanese orphans form a rock band. |
